One of the major contributions to the aesthetic pleasure we derive from cities like New Orleans, Charleston, and Savannah is made by the extensive use of decorative wrought iron. Fences, gates, stair rails, balconies, even statues and other architectural features benefit from its versatility. There are also structural and functional benefits compared to wood. Few of us, though, are prone to exclaiming, "Oh, my! Doesn't that look strong and fire resistant!"
There are technical distinctions between wrought iron and cast iron that I am not going into here. For the purposes of this post, the only thing that really matters is that it looks good because it can be made to assume interesting, even delicate shapes. See for yourself why Shirley and I are not all wrought up for nothing.
Those are iron birds, not actual.
